There is no better foundation for your hot tub than a concrete pad. Concrete pads, when installed, are typically poured with a pitch to allow for water run-off. That said, if your pad is installed correctly, it will leave your hot tub out of level. Soil erosion, poor drainage, roots and cracking may also lead to an uneven pad.
Most concrete on average is pitched 1/8” – 1/4” for every foot in length. When doing the math for your average hot tub that’s approximately 1.25“-1.5” off level. The Spa Level-R is the only product on the market that can raise your hot tub off the ground, protecting it and your pad from wood rot and mold, allowing you to level it safely.
Most importantly, many if not all the manufacturers site prep manuals discuss that the hot tub be installed on a level surface. It is also commonly noted that structural damage to the hot tub from incorrect installation, placement or inadequate foundation is not covered under the hot tub warranty and may, in fact, void it. HOW TO POUR A CONCRETE PAD
While gravel/stone can be used as a base for a hot tub in some situations, it’s generally not recommended because it can shift over time, especially if using smaller pea gravel, leading to an uneven surface, potential damage to the hot tub, and discomfort when stepping out onto it with bare feet; a more stable foundation like concrete is usually preferred for optimal support and longevity. It is not uncommon to find articles, products, or comments on forums that promote a stone base that the spa / hot tub can be placed on. We encourage you to read some of the manufacturer’s site prep manuals below as they discuss settling when it comes to using pavers, gravel, brick and sand.
